Traditionally, Portuguese eat on Christmas Eve the typical bacalhau and on Christmas Day some meat, depending on the area of the country the family and their customs. The majority of restaurants will be offering special Christmas menus, so it’s better to book it in advance. If you have a sweet tooth you must try one of the most typical treats including tronco da natal, bolo de rei, arroz doce, filhós, broas castelares or rabanada. Travel to the mountains
One of the most beautiful places surrounding Lisbon changes it’s spirit to a holiday mood. There will be an impressive 15 meters tall Christmas tree in the Palace of Sintra that allows visitors to take pictures inside. During this month the city is fully decorated all the way from Marques do Pombal until Praca do Comércio, where you can find the biggest Christmas tree. The best way to see everything is by foot! When the cold hits, you can buy some hot mulled wine on Rossio square or some roasted chestnuts. Lisbon truly sparkles with all the lights and decorations; let’s see if you can spot a house that looks like a present on Avenida!
